Whirligig beetles are small beetles that gather in groups and spin rapidly across still water. Their compound eyes split into upper and lower pairs, watching above and below the surface at once. While whirling, they change direction constantly yet rarely collide, sensing reflected ripples almost like sonar.

- Antennae — Short and stout, held close to the surface; thought to sense the faint vibrations of surface ripples
- Body — Streamlined and oval; often carries a layer of air trapped against its underside to aid brief dives
