The Japanese rhinoceros beetle is a large scarab beetle common in East Asian woodlands. Males bear a forked head horn and a shorter thoracic horn, used to battle rivals over sap and mates, not to fly. By day it hides in humus soil or bark crevices; at night it flies to oak trunks to feed on oozing sap.

Ecological role

Adults gather at night around the same sap wounds on tree trunks, sharing this limited resource with stag beetles and moths. Larvae break down fallen leaves and rotting wood in the soil, playing an important part in the forest’s litter cycle.

Its larval stage lasts 8–10 months, but the adult stage, when it carries its horn, usually lasts only 1–2 months — the horn is a brief piece of equipment worn near the end of its life.
