The Japanese Jewel Beetle’s wing covers (elytra) shimmer with a golden-green-to-red structural color, produced not by pigment but by light interference across microscopic layers. Its larvae bore into weakened or dead trees, adults feed on host leaves, and the elytra were historically used as inlay material in crafts.

A jewel beetle’s elytra color comes from thin-film interference, not pigment, so it never fades even after a century in a drawer. Elytra inlaid on the Tamamushi Shrine at Horyu-ji Temple still show iridescence.

Common, though local populations have declined as dead-wood habitat has diminished
Anatomy
