The Chinese Golden Ground Beetle has wing cases (elytra) studded with golden-green pitted dots like scattered stars, and is a swift ground-dwelling predator. With reduced hindwings and elytra fused shut, it can never fly — it hunts snails and insect larvae on foot, and its larvae are equally fierce hunters.

Ecological role
Both adult and larval Chinese Golden Ground Beetles are active ground-dwelling predators, consuming large numbers of snails, slugs, and the immature stages of many insects, making them important natural pest regulators in farm and forest ecosystems.

A golden ground beetle never flies from hatching to death — its elytra are sealed shut for life, so both adult and larva must hunt and evade predators purely by running, a ground hunter through and through.

Anatomy
- Elytra — Densely pitted with golden-green dots like scattered stars, fused along the midline so it cannot lift them to fly
- Mandibles — Sickle-shaped and interlocking, these jaws (mandibles) grip and slice through snails and insect larvae
- Legs — Long and built for running — its main means of hunting and escape now that it has lost the ability to fly
- Compound eyes — Set on either side of the head, helping it track the outline and movement of prey during nighttime activity
- Antennae — Thread-like and slender, constantly waving as it walks to detect ground scent and vibration
- Pronotum — Slightly heart-shaped, this plate behind the head (pronotum) has ridges along its sides that echo the elytra's star-like markings
