The Goliath Beetle lives in Africa's equatorial rainforests and ranks among the world's heaviest beetles. Males bear a Y-shaped forked head horn (cephalic horn) used to pry rivals away from food; the pronotum carries black-and-white stripes, and the elytra (wing cases) have a velvety chestnut-brown sheen.

Ecological role
Adults feed on sap and ripe fruit in the canopy, incidentally aiding pollination and seed dispersal; larvae stay hidden at ground level, breaking down protein-rich humus as part of the rainforest's nutrient cycle.

Goliath Beetle larvae can outweigh the adult several times over; breeders often supplement their diet with high-protein foods such as cat food to help them grow into the desired body and horn size.

Common in its native range; widely bred in captivity for the pet trade, though wild populations are threatened by rainforest logging
Anatomy
- Head horn — A Y-shaped forked head horn, used by males to flip rivals aside when competing over food and mates
- Elytra — The elytra have a matte, velvety chestnut-brown texture that contrasts with the black-and-white stripes on the pronotum
- Stripes — The black-and-white longitudinal stripes on the pronotum are the genus's most recognizable signature; their width varies between individuals
- Compound eyes — The compound eyes sit on either side of the head and are fairly sensitive to moving light and shadow
- Legs — Sharp claws on the tarsi keep it from slipping when gripping rough bark
- Pronotum — The broad, domed pronotum acts like a shield, and the longitudinal stripes are etched right onto it
