The robber fly is the fiercest aerial hunter among the true flies (Diptera), bristling with stiff hairs and oversized compound eyes, favoring a sunlit perch to watch from. It launches at passing insects, intercepts from behind, and seizes its target with long, spiny legs — even bees and dragonflies are fair game.

Ecological role
Adults are not picky eaters — bees, flies, beetles, even dragonflies are all on the menu, exerting top-level predation pressure on insect communities; larvae in the soil prey on white grubs and other underground pests, so both life stages spend their time controlling insect numbers.

That thick tuft of 'whiskers' on its face is no decoration: captured prey struggles hard, and the bristly mystax acts like a fencing mask, deflecting flailing legs and mouthparts trying to bite back.

- Foreleg — Thick and spiny, clamping around prey in midair like a pair of pliers
- Wing — A pair of narrow membranous wings gives it explosive power over short bursts

- Haltere — A pair of small knobs (halteres) evolved from the hind wings, acting like gyroscopes during sharp turns
- Abdomen — Long and segmented; males carry claspers at the tip, females an egg-laying organ (ovipositor)
