A stingless mimic in bee-striped disguise

The hoverfly’s black-and-yellow body mimics a bee, but it has only one pair of wings and no sting — pure disguise. It can hover, fly backward and turn on a dime, with flight control far more precise than most bees, and its larvae are important predators of aphid populations.

Ecological role
