The Oriental Mole Cricket is covered in dense short velvety hair, and its front legs are specialized into broad, flat digging tools built for breaking through soil rather than jumping. Anatomy
- Front Legs — Broad and flat like a shovel, with toothed shins (tibiae) built purely for digging, not jumping
- Pronotum — Swollen into a shield shape, covering the neck to help it push forward through tunnels
- Hindwing — Folded away under the short forewings, unfurled only occasionally for night flight
- Abdomen — Soft and hairy, with sensory appendages (cerci) at the tip that detect vibration inside the burrow
- Compound Eyes — Small and reduced; life underground places little demand on vision
- Antennae — Thread-like and shorter than the body, suited to the sensory needs of a burrowing lifestyle
