Assassin Bug

An assassin who carries its own syringe
The assassin bug is an ambush predator among the true bugs, its curved, piercing beak (rostrum) folded into a groove beneath the head when not in use. It creeps up in silence, drives the beak in, and injects enzyme-laden saliva that liquefies the victim's tissue outside the body before drawing it back up.

Ecological role
Assassin bugs prey on caterpillars, other true bugs, and many other insects, making them valuable natural enemies in orchards and farmland; parts of Southeast Asia have already tried rearing them for release as biological pest control.
Did you know
Some assassin bug nymphs pile dead ants and sand on their backs as a mobile shield; when threatened, adults rub the beak tip against a ridged groove on the chest to produce a squeaking warning sound.

Anatomy
- Rostrum — Three segments forming a curved blade, folded away into a groove on the underside of the thorax when not in use
- Foreleg — The tibiae carry sticky pads that pin down struggling prey and never let go
- Pronotum — The plate behind the head (pronotum) is clearly divided into front and rear lobes, the rear one often spined or brightly marked
- Compound Eye — Rounded and bulging, tracking every move of the prey before the ambush
- Antenna — Long and thin, made of four segments, tapping the prey to test its size and whether it is still alive
- Abdomen — The side edges flare upward and show, marked with warning-colored patterns
